High population density areas like San Mateo are prone to have a large number of pedestrians. With so many people walking along and crossing streets, it is imperative drivers remain attentive. Any distraction can lead to an accident that can leave a pedestrian with a serious injury or dead. When a catastrophic injury such as a brain injury is inflicted on a victim he may be left with a very difficult life ahead of him.
One such accident involving serious injuries occurred recently in San Mateo when a 67-year old woman was hit by a van while trying to cross the road. According to police, the woman was in the crosswalk when she was struck. The driver, who stopped at the scene, did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The woman was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Recovering from a pedestrian accident can be a very trying time physically, emotionally and financially. A brain injury can make normal life difficult to achieve and even seemingly minor injuries can leave a victim with a lifetime of pain. Physical rehabilitation to recover from such injuries is often not only hard and frustrating, but expensive, too. Those who cannot afford this care may never recover.
Fortunately, legal action may help pay for these medical expenses. By filing a lawsuit against a distracted driver, a victim puts herself in a place where compensation may be obtained. If a lawsuit is won by showing negligence and causation, then the victim can take her compensation and pay off medical bills and ease any pain and suffering.
San Mateo drivers must be aware of pedestrians to avoid a devastating car collision. Sometimes, only legal action against distracted drivers will raise the awareness needed to protect the vulnerable.
