Head-on collision kills California woman, injures another

A recent late night head-on collision on California Highway 1 killed a San Jose woman and seriously injured another. Though many of the details are unknown at this point, this incident portrays the many road dangers San Jose residents face.

Accidents result from many different factors. Cars and roads can be defective, and nature can pose its own threats.

Cerebral palsy result of California doctor's negligence

San Mateo, California, residents go to the doctor for many reasons -- a cold, the flu, checkups and pregnancy. When people go to see specialists, they expect to be taken care of to the greatest extent, with doctors and medical professionals providing assistance in accordance with their professional obligations. This care, unfortunately, is not always provided. Doctor negligence and mistakes often lead to medical malpractice.

When negligence occurs in a hospital resulting in injury, the victim and his or her loved ones can receive compensation to cover medical expenses, the loss of enjoyment of life and pain and suffering. This type of negligence, and subsequent recovery in court, took place recently in California, when a doctor's error resulted in a baby being born with cerebral palsy.

California drivers admit to texting and driving

The road is full of distractions. Billboard advertisements, neon business signs, people, animals and other drivers can all divert a driver's attention and lead to a car accident. But perhaps the biggest distractions come from drivers themselves. A new study has shown that 80 percent of San Diego, California, students admitted to talking and texting while driving. Of this 80 percent, roughly half said they felt capable of talking on a cell phone and driving without being distracted.

This attitude is unfortunately not unique to these students. Drivers across the country, including those in California, are becoming more and more comfortable talking and texting while driving. Though many feel competent dashing off a text message from behind the wheel, these acts often lead to negligent driving which results in car accidents. Such accidents can cause severe injury or death and can lead to a lifetime of medical and financial troubles for all involved.

Three Concord bicyclists involved in fatal accident

Bicycling is a way of life in the California bay area. Some people ride to and from work and school, while others bike for sport and fun. But considering that cyclists must share the road with vehicles many times heavier and faster than they are, bicycling can be just as dangerous, if not more so, than driving. Staying on bike friendly roads and always wearing a helmet are smart ways to stay safe, but when drivers act errantly, negligently or recklessly; even the safest bikers are vulnerable.

One of these tragic events happened recently in Concord, California. A father and his two young daughters were riding their bikes when a teenage driver jumped a curb and struck them. The father and one of the daughters were killed; the other daughter survived with minor injuries. Witnesses allege that the driver was speeding.

Doctors keep secrets that could lead to medical malpractice

When Bay area residents go to the doctor, they expect to hear the truth about their health. In fact, many of us probably do not even question what we are being told.

A new study has shown that doctors are not as truthful as they appear. This is troublesome because a doctor who keeps the truth from a patient may be negligent and misdiagnose that patient's condition. This malpractice can lead to serious injury, disability or even death.

Recovering from a brain injury takes time

A woman woke up one day to find herself in a Sacramento, California, hospital surrounded by flowers sent from strangers. Her head throbbed. Her memory was groggy. The young woman had a collapsed lung, paralysis on the right side of her body and significant brain damage that required surgery. Was it a bad dream? No, it was the aftermath of an eight day coma as the result of a car accident.

This woman is just one of the 1.7 million people who face brain injuries each year. The road to recovery from brain trauma is long and sometimes never ending. Long-lasting effects can include amnesia, seizures, memory loss, depression, sleep disturbances, headaches, and personality changes. Though rehabilitation might help ease these issues, the medical costs associated with long-term care and recovery is high.

Negligent drivers cause several wrongful death incidents

The San Francisco, California, Bay Area has a problem on its hands. In 2011, 859 pedestrians were hit by drivers, leading to the wrongful deaths of 17. Researchers believe that those numbers are low because of a lack of reporting. What is the cause of these horrible accidents? In most cases, negligent drivers failing to yield to pedestrians are to blame.

Though community initiatives are taking place to slow traffic down and prevent these fatal car crashes, residents should be cautious. At any time they are hit by a vehicle while properly crossing the street, they have a legal cause of action against the vehicle's driver. In a worst case scenario, where the pedestrian is fatally wounded, grieving family members and loved ones can file a suit for wrongful death.

Injured Giants fan continues to improve

It's been a year since a San Francisco Giants fan was beaten so severely that it left him with permanent brain injuries and around-the-clock care. The incident took place when he was involved in an altercation with two other men because he was wearing the jersey of another team.

Looking back on the incident it's incredible to think that another person could hurt someone so badly over something so trivial. The injured man has made many strides, but is confined to a wheelchair and can respond to questions, but it takes him a while to process what was asked and the words that come out are delayed. The man also suffers from short-term memory loss. Doctors feel that with his type of brain injury, he probably will not improve much more.

Car accident kills one on dangerous road in California

California drivers who travel on Highway 17's Laurel Curve will be happy to hear that construction will begin on a temporary median barrier because another person was killed last week in a car accident. This stretch of road ranks as the most dangerous mountain highway from Los Gatos to Santa Cruz.

The accident last week has prompted officials to install the temporary barriers. A man, 57, lost control of his vehicle in the rain, and crossed into the oncoming traffic, where he crashed into other cars. The driver was killed instantly and the other drivers had only minor injuries.

Man wins settlement in traumatic brain injury case

The majority of young people really don't think about the risks associated with a career choice. They either choose their field based on their desire, need, or it falls into their lap because it's a family business. But for one young man, his job choice caused him a traumatic brain injury.

In 2004, the man fell from a 20-foot scaffold at work while employed as a painter. He has since been involved with a workers' compensation suit since the accident and recently won a settlement totaling $8.9 million. The settlement, which is one of the largest known in California history, is based on the severity of the man's injuries, he was young when it happened, and will require extensive medical care for the rest of his life.
